Steinman's career-high 40 fuels Hawks output for first NE10 win

MANCHESTER, N.H. (December 5, 2021) – Saint Anselm College rode a career-high 40 points from senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Massachusetts/Pittsfield) and held Stonehill College, ranked No. 7 in this week's D2SIDA East Region poll, to 35-percent shooting to claim a 67-55 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium this afternoon.

How it Happened

    Saint Anselm held Stonehill to just four points on 2-of-12 shooting in the second quarter, while connecting on 5-of-9 (55.6%) shots, to take a seven point (28-21) halftime lead after the Skyhawks held a two-point lead (17-15) after ten minutes.
  • Senior Sophie Glidden scored the first basket of the second frame for a four point Stonehill lead (19-15), but Saint Anselm outscored the Skyhawks 13-2 over the remainder of the quarter, capped by a Steinman three-pointer with 13-seconds left.
  • Robles scored the first basket of the second half to extend Saint Anselm's lead to nine (30-21), but Stonehill followed with a 7-2 run to close within four (32-28) after a Bramanti layup off a turnover with 7:32 left in the frame.
  • Saint Anselm opened a ten point cushion (40-30), keyed by eight straight points, including a pair of three-pointers, by Steinman, but back-to-back triples from Bramanti had Stonehill back within four (40-36) with 2:34 left in the frame.
  • Saint Anselm took a seven point lead (46-39) into the fourth quarter and a Steinman three-point play restored the Hawks ten point cushion (49-39) with seven minutes left to play.
  • Saint Anselm's lead grew to 11 (54-43) after a Steinman layup off a turnover with three minutes left, but Stonehill pulled back within seven (56-49) after a Raymond layup a minute later.
  • Steinman answered with a three-pointer and Saint Anselm closed out the win at the free-throw line, converting 7-of-8 down the stretch. Steinman scored 17 of the Hawks 21 fourth quarter points on 5-of-7 field goals and 6-of-7 free-throws to finish off her 40-point day.

Noteworthy

  • Steinman's 40 points accounted for 60-percent of the Saint Anselm offense on the day, with she and Turco combining for 53 points and 79-percent of the Hawks scoring.
  • Bramanti has scored in double figures all four games this season, and 17th time in her career overall.
  • Raymond matched her season-high with 16 points and has reached double figures in all three of her games played this season and nine-straight games overall. She has scored in double figures in 42 of her 50 career games played.
  • Stonehill shot 42.1-percent from the field (8-for-19) in the first quarter and 46.7% (7-15) in the third, but was 2-for-12 (16.7%) shooting in the second and 6-for-20 (30%) in the fourth. The Skyhawks finished 3-for-25 (12%) from three-point distance.

Stonehill (1-3, 0-3 NE10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Assumption University for an NE10 matchup at Merkert Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. That night will also kick off the athletic department's Holiday Toy Drive to benefit My Brother's Keeper, with any fan bringing an unwrapped, packaged toy earning free admission to the game. Saint Anselm (4-4, 1-2 NE10) is off until Friday, when it hosts Felician University for a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.
