Women’s Basketball Comes up Just Short at Adelphi, 68-67

Emma Carter

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (January 22, 2022) – Senior Emma Carter (Bristol, Vt.) poured in a game-high 28 points on Saturday afternoon, but it would not be enough for the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team. The Ravens came up just short on the road at Adelphi, and suffered a 68-67 Northeast-10 Conference defeat at Center for Recreation and Sport. Graduate student Emily Miccile led the Panthers with 20 points, including the 1000th of her career.

With the loss, the Ravens fell to 6-6 (2-4 NE10), while Adelphi improved to 8-8 (6-5 NE10).

In the first period, the Panthers took control by a 20-12 margin, led by seven apiece from senior Ty Hawkins and graduate student Sarah Deyo. They would keep their lead for the majority of the game, though things wound up tight in the end. Franklin Pierce would briefly take one-point leads on two occasions, including inside the final two minutes, but Adelphi would not be denied.

With 1:39 to play, Carter drained a three-pointer as the Ravens took the lead, 67-66, erasing what had been as much as a 13-point fourth-quarter lead for Adelphi. On the next possession though, Hawkins made a layup to make it a one-point lead the other way, at 68-67. Though there were still 83 seconds to play, the layup would stand as the final scoring, as Carter came up empty on each of Franklin Pierce's final two possessions and the Panthers held on for the win.

The Panthers shot 42.6% from the field (29-for-68) and 22.2% from the three-point line (4-for-18). Franklin Pierce answered with 37.3% from the floor (25-for-67) and 44.4% from behind the arc (8-for-18).

For the Ravens, Carter and senior Lisa Sulejmani (Burlington, Vt.) combined for 44 of the 67 points in defeat. Carter shot 11-for-25 from the field for 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sulejmani shot 6-for-13 from the floor for 16 points and snagged six rebounds of her own. Sophomore forward Gisela Vazquez Segura (Igualada, Spain) put together a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

For Adelphi, Miccile went 8-for-21 from the floor on the way to 20 points, and was joined in double digits by Hawkins (16 points) and Deyo (11 points). Deyo snared a game-best 13 rebounds to complete her double-double.

On Tuesday evening, the Ravens will be back home for another NE10 matchup, against Pace University, with tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
