Balanced Attack Leads Women’s Basketball over SCSU, 77-66

Gisela Vazquez Segura

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January 19, 2022) - Back in action for the first time in over a month, the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team held off a late surge from the Southern Connecticut State Owls on Wednesday night at Moore Field House. Four Ravens finished in double digits, led by 22 points from sophomore Gisela Vazquez Segura (Igualada, Spain), as Franklin Pierce posted a 77-66 road win in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 6-5 (2-3 NE10) and snap a three-game losing skid. SCSU falls to 6-7 (3-4 NE10) with the loss.

Owls' graduate student Jessica Fressle led all players with 25 points, and added 15 rebounds to finish her double-double. Just behind her was Segura, whose 22 points led the Ravens. Segura went 5-for-5 from beyond the arc in her strongest offensive showing of the season thus far. As a team, the Ravens shot 52% from the field (28-for-54) and 56% from three-point range (10-for-18), while the Owls managed just 36% (24-for-68) and 31% (8-for-26), respectively.

Behind Segura, it was three other Ravens in double digits, including 16 points from senior Emma Carter (Bristol, Vt.). Senior Lisa Sulejmani (Burlington, Vt.) filled out her stat line with 15 points, nine assists, six rebounds and a trio of steals. Sophomore Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain) chalked up 12 points and seven rebounds.

Franklin Pierce really clamped down on the defensive glass, as the Ravens piled up 31 defensive rebounds, of the 44 missed shots by SCSU. The Ravens turned the ball over 23 times on the night, but still held a 21-16 advantage in points off of turnovers, as the Owls failed to capitalize.

The Ravens came out firing and led for almost the entire game, save for an SCSU basket to open the proceedings. Franklin Pierce led by as much as 23 late in the first half, on the way to a 43-25 halftime lead. The Owls, helped by Fressle's performance and a game-high 11 assists from senior Zoe Amalbert, began to fight back in the third, but the mountain proved to be too high, as the Ravens coasted to the 11-point win.

Up next for Franklin Pierce is a road matchup against Adelphi, set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m., in Garden City, N.Y.
