SHARIF-BROWN NETS CAREER HIGH IN OVERTIME VICTORY
Orangeburg, N.Y. (11/20/23) Forward Seth Sharif-Brown (Hackensack, N.J.) led all scorers with a career high 32 points tonight to lead the Dominican University New York men's basketball team to a 92-88 overtime victory over the visiting Mountaineers of Mansfield University in non-conference action played on Coach Baxter Court.
With the win Dominican improves to 4-0 overall while Mansfield now stands at 2-2 on the season.
Sharif-Brown led four Chargers in double figures with 32 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Guard Javel Cherry (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) netted 20 points and four rebounds, while Joshua Serrano (Amityville, N.Y.) scored 12 points and three steals.
Joseph Merrill (Derry, N.H.) tallied 10 points and a team high eight caroms with Emmanuel Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) adding nine points and six boards.
In a game that featured six ties and 16 lead changes, the Mountaineers out rebounded the Chargers 49-45. Dominican took advantage of Mansfield's errors, scoring 27 points on 25 turnovers.
Dominican used a 22-10 run in the first half to take their biggest lead of the game 24-11 with 11:45 to play in the period. Mansfield then scored 11 unanswered points to cut the lead to 24-22 with under ten minutes to go and later claimed a 33-29 advantage. A 7-2 closing half run by the Chargers regained a 36-35 lead at the break.
Sharif-Brown gave the Chargers the 80-78 edge on a free throw with just over two minutes left in regulation. A Mountaineer layup with 28 ticks on the clock tied the game at 80-all and forced the overtime period.
In the overtime period, Smith began a 9-3 Charger run to build up an 91-85 lead with under a minute left and Merrill closed out the game with a free throw for the 92-88 victory.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Queens College in a non-conference game on Coach Baxter Court.
