CHARGERS OPEN SEASON WITH VICTORY OVER D'YOUVILLE UNIVERSITY
Caldwell, N.J. (11/10/23) The Dominican University New York men's basketball team open the 2023-2024 season with a 116-81 victory over D'Youville University in the first game of the Caldwell University Conference Challenge, hosted by Caldwell University in the George R. Newman Center.
The Chargers never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 41 points on a trey from Marquis Harris ((114-73) with just over a minute left in regulation.
Dominican opened the game with 14 unanswered points and extended the lead to 25-3 with 14 minutes left in the half. The Saints closed out the half on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 48-34 at the intermission.
DUNY began the second half with an 11-2 run to increase the lead to 59-38 and never looked back en route to the win.
Javel Cherry (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led three Chargers in double figures with 25 points.
Joshua Serrano (Amityville, N.Y.) scored 18 points, four assists and three steals, while Joseph Merrill (Derry, N.H.) netted 17 points.
The bench accounted for 46 points in the victory, led by Isaiah Honis (Bridgewater, N.H.) who recorded nine points and four rebounds and Michael O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) who scored eight points.
Dominican shot 59.5% (44-74) from the floor in the game, whil DYU held the 38-37 edge in rebounds.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday afternoon at the Caldwell University Conference Challenge when they take on Mercy University.
