Kabantu Shines as Bentley Dominates AIC, 91-43

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman guard Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) had a career game, finishing with collegiate bests in points (22) and assists (4) as well as nine rebounds, as Bentley University won wire-to-wire for the second straight game, 91-43 over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Bentley, with its fourth win in five games, improved to 9-4 overall and 7-2 NE10, remaining percentage points behind Southern New Hampshire in the Northeast Division standings. AIC dropped to 6-8 overall and 3-6 conference.

All five Falcon starters scored in doubles with Kabantu followed by junior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove GS) (15), sophomore guard Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) (13), graduate forward Autumn Ceppi (Bedford/Dana Hall School) (11) and sophomore guard Brooke Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely HS) (10).

Bentley was in charge from the start and went into intermission up 35, 47-12, after a long buzzer-beating jumper from sophomore guard Janessa Gonzalez (Meriden, Conn./St. Paul Catholic HS) just inside the three-point stripe. The Falcons outscored the Yellow Jackets 21-6 in the opening quarter and bettered that in the second, 26-6.

The game opened with a 16-2 burst that included a pair of three-pointers from Thompson, who made her first five attempts from downtown. In the second, 14 straight points by the Falcons, including five by Obar, produced a shocking 35-7 score with 3:46 remaining.

Coach C White's squad was in front by as much as 43 in the third quarter and the difference peaked at 51, 91-40, when Kabantu sank two free throws with 2:15 to play.

Kabantu, who bettered her previous high by ten points, made seven of 11 shots overall, two of three at the line and six of seven free throws. Thompson scored all her points from downtown, finishing five of seven from deep. Those two led Bentley in plus-minus with Kabantu at +43 and Thompson a +42.

Like Kabantu, Ceppi missed out on a double-double by a single rebound. Obar reached doubles for the first time as a collegian and also established a career-best with six assists.  Whitmore's 13 matched her career-best.

Junior guard Kyla Smith (Easton, Pa.) was the top scorer for AIC with 11 points.

Bentley outshot the visitors. .596-.269, and sank nine of 21 three-pointers. It was complete dominance in rebounds, 46-18, and the Falcons outscored the Yellow Jackets 40-12 in the paint.

The Falcons are back home Wednesday for a 5:30 pm game against 13-2 Pace. That game was originally scheduled for Jan. 15.
