Women’s Basketball Downed at Stonehill, 79-62

Emma Carter

EASTON, Mass. (February 8, 2022) -- Senior Emma Carter (Bristol, Vt.) went for a game-high 22 points on Tuesday night, but the rest of the Ravens shot just 16-for-43 (37%) from the floor at Merkert Gymnasium, as the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team suffered a 79-62 defeat on the road at Stonehill, in Northeast-10 Conference play. Senior Kayla Raymond scored 18 points to lead four Skyhawks in double digits in the victory.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 9-8 (5-6 NE10), while Stonehill improves to 9-6 (8-5 NE10).

Stonehill put the hammer down early, with a 22-14 advantage in the first quarter, on the way to a 46-point first half and a 12-point halftime lead (46-34). The Ravens kept things tighter in the second half, but could not put a dent in the lead, as the Skyhawks cruised to the 17-point victory.

Franklin Pierce forced Stonehill into 22 turnovers -- compared to just 13 for the Ravens -- but only converted that advantage into a 15-14 edge in points off of turnovers, thanks in large part to a poor shooting night. The crimson and grey shot just 24-for-63 (38%) from the floor and an ugly 7-for-14 (50%) from the free-throw line, while the Skyhawks countered with 34-for-70 (49%) from the field. Stonehill erased the turnover margin, and then some, with its work on the glass, as the Skyhawks outrebounded Franklin Pierce, 55-25. Stonehill claimed 19 offensive rebounds, which led to a 20-8 advantage in second-chance points.

Carter's 22 points led all players and paced three Ravens in double digits, as she was joined by sophomores Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain) with 16 and Gisela Vazquez Segura (Igualada, Spain) with 11. Monserrat added a team-best six rebounds, to go with three assists and three steals.

On the other side of the ledger, Stonehill posted a pair of double-doubles, as Raymond had 18 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Sophie Glidden added 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds of her own. The pair were joined in double figures by senior Isabella Santoro (11 points) and junior Jessie Semeniak (10 points).

The Ravens return home on Thursday evening, to host Southern New Hampshire in an NE10 contest at 5:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
