Women's Basketball Season Ends With Quarterfinal Exit Versus Bentley

Waltham, Mass. (February 28, 2022) – Following a win on the road in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team travelled to the Dana Athletic Center in Waltham, Mass. at Bentley University for a quarterfinal matchup against the Falcons.

With the loss the Ravens season ends with a final record of 12-15 (7-13 NE10) while the Falcons will move onto the NE10 Semi Final round and improve their record to 17-8 (14-6 NE10).

The first quarter started empty for the Ravens on their first two possessions, but a pair of steals by seniors Rylee Skinner (Leominster, Mass.) and Lisa Sulejmani (Burlington, Vt.) helped the Ravens to a 5-2 lead early in the game. Fellow senior Emma Carter (Bristol, Vt.) got on the scoresheet with a make from three point land, but the Falcons strong offensive pressure lifted the home team to a 11-10 lead at the halfway point of the period. Carter added a second three pointer later in the quarter to tie the game back up 16-16 with 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Each team added a finish at the rim to enter the first break tied 18-18.

Senior Kari Brekke hit a pair from beyond the arc and added a make inside to lead the falcons with 8 points in the period. Carter finished 2-2 from three point range with 6 points for the Ravens.

The second quarter was just as even as the first with both teams trading points in the paint during the opening stages of the period. Sophomore Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain) regained the lead for the Ravens 24-22 four minutes into the quarter with a layup in tight to the basket. Carter added another triple on the very next possession to extend it. On the other side of the court the Ravens defense held the Falcons off the scoreboard for over 2 minutes with strong play, but a free throw from graduate student Autumn Ceppi put an end to the scoreless streak and brought the score to 31-25 in favor of Franklin Pierce. Bentley went on a run of their own in the final minute and a half of the half outscoring the Ravens 6-0 to tie the game ahead of the extended break.

Carter paced the field with 9 points with a single make from beyond the arc in the second quarter while Gimenez Monserrat added 9 points of her own and led the rebound category with 6. Brekke was held scoreless, but sophomore Maggie Whitmore carried much of the load with 6 points in the half.

Coming out of the break the adjustments made by the Falcons showed positive effects on the offensive side of the ball outscoring the Ravens 10-4 through the first three and a half minutes of the half. Senior Kolleen Bouchard drained a corner three to extend the Falcon lead to 44-37 halfway through the period. Franklin Pierce started to find the basket with consistency. Sophomore Gisela Vazquez Segura (Igualada, Spain) finished a basket in the paint to bring the score to 46-42. Bentley didn't slow down though extending the lead back to 50-44 at the end of the third quarter.

Ceppi found the basket to the tune of 6 points during the period leading the Falcon attack. Vazquez Segura helped out the Ravens on the other end with 6 points of her own.

Bentley rebuilt the lead back to 10 points in the start of the fourth quarter with help from a three point make by freshman Amanda Kabantu. Halfway through the final quarter of play the Ravens were held to just a single basket and trailed 58-46. Looking for an answer the Ravens bench took a timeout, but Bentley continued to roll through the Ravens. Despite strong offense by Franklin Pierce in the final stages of the game in the end the falcons came out on top, 63-52, putting an end to the Ravens season.

Carter finished with the team high in points with 14 and tied for the team high in rebounds with Gimenez Monserrat at 8. Whitmore totaled 16 points in the contest for the Falcons while grabbing 12 boards for a double-double stat line and the game high in both categories. Ceppi also recorded a double-double with 11-11.
