Strong Fourth Again Not Enough, as Women’s Basketball Downed at Dominican (N.Y.), 86-80

Ines Gimenez Monserrat

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (November 20, 2021) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team started strong and finished strong on Saturday afternoon on the road at Dominican (N.Y.). In between, however, a disastrous second quarter and a mediocre third quarter undid all the team's work, as the Ravens dropped an 86-80 non-conference decision at Hennessy Center. Senior Emma Carter (Bristol, Vt.) led three Ravens in double digits with a game-high 29 points, while fellow senior Rylee Skinner (Leominster, Mass.) added 24 off the bench. The host Chargers had four in double figures, led by 18 from sophomore Alexis Suarez.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-2, while Dominican stays perfect at 5-0.

The Ravens came out, drilled all three three-point attempts they took as part of a 9-for-15 first quarter, and opened up a 27-15 lead over the first 10 minutes. The tables turned in the second half though, as Franklin Pierce shot just 4-for-17, including 1-for-7 from long distance, and were outscored 27-9 to trail at the half, 42-36. Things only went marginally better in a third quarter which went to Dominican, 21-14, as the Chargers opened the lead up to 63-50 heading for the final stanza. Franklin Pierce was able to pour in 30 points in the fourth quarter, on 9-for-18 from the floor and a perfect 11-for-11 from the line, but could never get closer than four, on the way to the six-point loss.

The roller-coaster afternoon finished at 28-for-70 (40.0%) for the Ravens, who were roughly equaled by Dominican's 28-for-71 (39.4%) performance. It was a game of inside-versus-outside, as Franklin Pierce held a 46-26 advantage on points in the paint, but Dominican was better from behind the arc, as the Chargers went 9-for-23 from long distance, compared to 5-for-17 for the Ravens. Dominican also limited itself to 13 turnovers, compared to 18 for Franklin Pierce, though each side finished with 17 points off of turnovers.

Carter's game-high 29 came on 7-for-16 from the floor and a strong, 13-for-14 effort from the foul line. Skinner added 24 on 10-for-17 from the field. It was a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double for sophomore Ines Gimenez Monserrat (Mallorca, Spain), who shot 7-for-16 on the day.

On the other side of the ledger, Suarez went 6-for-15 from the floor for her 18 points, to lead three Dominican starters in double digits. Graduate student Khay'la Latimer added 17 on 6-for-12 shooting, which included 5-for-10 from three-point range, while freshman Tanasha Mills chipped in 16 more on just 3-for-10 from the field, though she did go 7-for-8 at the foul line. Junior Casey Carangelo went for a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double off the bench.

The Ravens are back on the road on Tuesday, Nov. 23, when they open their Northeast-10 Conference campaign at Assumption at 5:30 p.m.
