Men’s Basketball Starts Season With Win Over UDC
The Purple Knights won their opener of the 2023-24 season Saturday afternoon with a home victory over District of Columbia.
Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team started their season with a 90-72 victory over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds. The Purple Knights outshot their opponents, particularly from beyond the arc, making seven three-pointer to the Firebirds two. The non-conference win starts off UB's record at 1-0 overall.
Bridgeport enjoyed a gap in shooting efficiency over UDC, going 31-of-68, 45.6% from the floor and 7-of-30, 23.3% from three-point range, bettering the Firebirds' 40% from the floor and 16.7% from long range.
The Purple Knights were led in attack by Joshua Dennis (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) with his 22 points, as he shot 7-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-6 from three-point range. He added four assists, two rebounds and one steal.
Jayden Iturmendi (Rs-Sr., York, Pa.) contributed 15 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Senior Tim Dawson (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in 14 points along with a game-high five steals, two rebounds and one assist.
D'Andre Collins (Sr., Newark, N.J.) led the effort under the boards with nine rebounds and four points while Sam DeSouza (Grad., Brooklyn, NY) registered two blocks to accompany his seven points and three rebounds.
The leading provider for UB was Junior Nick Traill (Valley Stream, N.Y.) with five assists added to his seven points, six rebounds and two steals.
Up next, UB will host Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday, November 12th at 6:30 p.m. in the Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium.
