Bentley Posts 79-70 Win over Assumption Behind Thompson’s Career Night

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) scored 18 of her career-best 25 points in the second half as the Bentley University women's basketball team stayed unbeaten in Northeast-10 Conference action with a 79-70 win over Assumption University in the Dana Center Wednesday evening.

Bentley, which never trailed in a game that was tied only twice, improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 NE10. Assumption dropped to 4-3 overall with its third loss in four conference games.

The second quarter was pivotal as the Falcons outscored the Greyhounds 25-11 to extend a two-point game after one to 42-26 at the break. The Falcons were 10 of 16, with a pair of three-balls, in the quarter while limiting the visitors of five baskets in 13 attempts.

Seven different Falcons scored in the stanza with senior guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./ Appleton North HS) and senior guard Kolleen Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton HS) each scoring six.

Included in the second was a 10-0 run over a stretch of 100 seconds, making it 37-24 with four minutes left in the quarter. Bouchard led the charge with six of the ten points.

Bentley, up 56-45 after three quarters, started the fourth with four unanswered points to extend the differential to 17. However, Assumption heated up and used an 18-6 run to pull within five with a minute-and-a-half to play. Six of those were scored by senior guard Caterina Fonseca (Enfield, Conn.).

The Hounds drew with four twice in the final 33 seconds before Bentley locked up the W by making five of six free throws in the last 26.6 seconds.

Thompson, whose previous high of 23 came in February 2020 against the Hounds, made 8 of 14 shots overall, with two triples, and was perfect on seven free throw attempts.

Brekke, Bouchard and graduate forward Autumn Ceppi (Bedford/Dana Hall School) each added 10 points to the Falcon attack. Brekke and Ceppi each added six rebounds and Bouchard was a +23.

Sophomore guard Amanda Mieczkowski (Hadley) led Assumption with 18 points.

Both teams shot relatively well with Bentley finishing at 50 percent and Assumption at 47 percent. The Falcons owned the boards, with a 38-23 advantage.

Bentley is back at home Saturday for a 1 pm contest against Franklin Pierce.
