Women's Hoops Suffers First Loss Of 2022-23 Season At AIC On Wednesday Night, 75-67
Purple Knights Now 2-1 On The Young Season
Springfield, Mass.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team held a one-point, 53-52, lead heading into the fourth quarter of Wednesday night's non-conference game at American International College, but the final stanza provided unkind to the visitors, as the host Yellow Jackets outscored the Purple Knights, 23-14 over the final 10 minutes of action to come away with a 75-67 victory. UB is now 2-1 on the season, and AIC is now 1-3.
UB was ice cold from the floor in the fourth quarter hitting only 4-of-14 field goal attempts.
The hosts also benefited from 23 turnovers from the Purple Knights which led to 19 points on the evening.
Bridgeport freshman Amani Melendez (Woodbridge, Va.) led her team in scoring with 20 points on the night, and sophomore Brianna Meekins (Bridgeport, Conn.) also reached double figures for the Purple Knights with 17 in the loss.
AIC's Tia-Marie Martinez tied Melendez for game-high scoring honors, as she also netted 20 points to lead three Yellow Jackets in double digits.
Senior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led UB on the glass grabbing eight rebounds.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will close out its 2022-23 season-opening, four-game road trip at Pace University on Saturday afternoon. Tip-time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
