Women's Game Recaps #50 - 2/6/15

Hawks soar in Queen City clash…

  • St. Anselm snapped a halftime tie by scoring the first nine points of the second half and went on to record a 78-64 win at Southern New Hampshire, wresting the last NE-10 Northeast playoff spot away from the Penmen in the process. A back-and-forth first half featuring eleven ties and ten lead changes ended, appropriately enough, even at 37. Caitlin Abela (22 points, 7 boards) scored seven of the points in the Hawks’ 9-0 spree to begin the final frame, putting the visitors into a non-refundable 46-37 lead (17:05). The margin was about the same after a Kaylea Griffin (8 points, 7 rebounds) basket at 8:16 for SNHU, 66-58, but that was the final stand for the Penmen. St. Anselm netted the next ten points, including four each from Abela and Candace Andrews (21 points, 6 assists, 6 boards), and the Hawks had a 76-58 lead with 2:35 to go, more than enough to secure the spoils. Ali Glennon (14 points) and Kaila Duarte (10 points, 8 boards) also had solid games for the Hawks, who shot 54% overall, the major team stat advantage in this contest (SNHU shot just under 40%). Vic Wiseman topped the Penmen in scoring (21 points) and rebounds (8 boards) but SNHU never got any traction in the second half. SNHU has lost their last four games and are now tied with St. Michael’s for 6th place in the division, both a game behind St. Anselm.

Rams home winning streak ends at hands of Huskies…

  • Nationally-ranked Bloomsburg (18-2; #17 in the WBCA/USA Today poll; tied for 12th with Stonehill in the D2SIDA poll) pulled away from Philadelphia in the second half at the Gallagher Center last night, claiming an 81-63 win in their annual non-league meeting. The Huskies, who have won eleven games in a row, used a 12-2 surge (five different scorers in the span) to break a 46-46 tie and take the lead for good (58-48, 9:22). After the Rams closed to within 60-53, BU popped in the next eight points to extend the gap to double digits (68-53, 6:27), which is where it remained for the duration. The Rams closed a competitive first half with a 9-3 spurt to send the game to the break tied at 35 but could not respond sufficiently once the Huskies pushed ahead. Marla Simmons (18 points), Morgan Klunk (16 points, 9-9 FT), Taylor Maldonado (13 points, 7 assists) and Camden Boehner (13 points) led the attack for Bloomsburg as they shot well across the board (49% FG, 9-20 3FG, 14-14 FT) and had more pop from their bench than the Rams (26-8). Bria Young (13 points), Tori Arnao (12 points, 8 rebounds) and Najah Jacobs (12 points) topped the Philadelphia effort, one that shot 44% but hit only 4-15 from long-range and left points on the table at the line (17-27 FT). The loss was the first for the Rams at home since November 16, 2013, a winning streak that reached 20 games before last night (ten of those coming this season).
