Women's Game Recaps #55 - 2/13/15

Ravens sting Panthers in Rindge…

  • A tasty non-league game between NE-10 foes in New Hampshire went Franklin Pierce’s way as the Ravens bumped off Adelphi, 66-61. Jessica Hurd’s (11 points, 14 rebounds) three-point play with 1:06 to go set the home team on their way to victory, snapping a 59-all tie. Jenna Halaby (11 points) brought AU back within one (62-61) with two foul shots at the :44 mark but Natalie Bastian (18 points, 8-8 FT) got them right back with 18 seconds left for FPU. Anh-Dao Tran missed a potentially game-tying trey at the other end and two Kara Charette (16 points, 12-12 FT) freebies iced it for the Ravens. The game featured a number of momentum swings, with Adelphi leading at the half, 24-19. The guests opened their lead to 30-19 at the onset of the final frame but a trio of 6-0 spells from the home team cut the lead to 40-39 (10:40). AU stayed ahead until a 10-0 Franklin Pierce burst sent the Ravens into a 55-49 lead (3:22), Bastian scoring eight of the points in the run. An 8-2 AU run tied the contest at 57 (Halaby hit a three-pointer to even it) at 1:56 and set up the closing stretch. Jemma Thacker (11 points, 6 boards) lent depth for the Ravens, who were dynamite at the line (27-28 FT) and won the glass battle (47-37) to mitigate nine more turnovers (24-15). Kelly Mannix (10 points, 11 boards) and Samantha Brenner (10 points) joined Halaby in doubles for Adelphi but they were only 8-13 at the line and saw their six-game win streak come to an end.

Philadelphia takes care of local rivals with late surge…

  • Philadelphia put together a 19-4 explosion over a nine-minute span to defeat Holy Family in a key CACC South clash. The Tigers led 57-56 with 11:10 to play after a 14-6 run in which Abigail Iannotti (19 points, 10 rebounds, 9-12 FG) scored the final six points. But the HFU hopes went up in smoke as the Rams took off on their decisive run, which ended with them ahead, 75-61 (2:20). Philadelphia began the game on a 17-5 spurt only to see Holy Family recover and assume a 41-38 halftime lead. The Rams countered that with a 12-2 spree to kick off the second half (50-43, 15:58) but they could not shed the Tigers until later on. Najah Jacobs (26 points), Monica Schacker (17 points, 4-5 3FG), Alex Heck (15 points, 12 boards) and Tori Arnao (10 points, 15 boards) were at the heart of the Rams attack, one that shot 44%, hit 7-11 from three-point land and 19-26 at the line while also compiling a 13/10 assist/turnover ratio. Sarah Pawlak (14 points) joined Iannotti in double digits for Holy Family but they shot 41% overall (7-22 from three-point land) and hit just 6-12 at the stripe. Philadelphia is now two games ahead of HFU (loss column) in the division in 2nd place; the Tigers are only a half-game ahead of Goldey-Beacom (even in the loss column) as the race tightens.

Bears stay atop CACC North standings…

  • Bloomfield used a 14-0 run to take the lead for good in the first half against Concordia and rolled to a 61-45 victory, keeping a step ahead of Caldwell in the CACC North. The aforementioned run pushed the Bears into a 28-14 lead (5:03) and they got to the break on top, 34-23. The teams mostly swapped points until a 9-0 BC flurry extended the gap to 54-35 with 7:15 left, ending any lingering Clipper hopes. Morgan Taylor (15 points), Tianna Smith (11 points) and Tierra Scott (10 points, 11 boards) collected the numbers for Bloomfield, which dominated in the paint (38-18) and ruled at the line (16-27; Concordia 7-10 FT). Jessica Rosalbo had a career-high 23 points (9-19 FG, 5-5 FT) to top the Concordia effort, with Khadijah Donaldson adding 10 points to the attack. The Clippers are a half-game behind Post (but tied in the loss column) in the chase for the final CACC North playoff berth.

Coast-to-coast win for Dominican…

  • A fast start (10-0) got Dominican off and running against Post and the Chargers were never threatened in what turned out to be an 81-61 win in Orangeburg. DC put up another 10-0 spell later in the half to help earn a 39-24 halftime lead; the margin stayed in double digits thereafter. Deja Gabbidon’s (career-high) 27 points (10-14 FG, 7-8 FT) and 13 rebounds led the path for DC but she had plenty of help, principally in the forms of Lashonda Hathorne (16 points, 7 boards, 7 steals), Shannon McGill (15 points) and Lisa Bouffard (10 points). Georgia Black submitted a personal-best for the Eagles (25 points; 10-17 FG, 5-10 3FG), with Nicole Viselli (12 points) and Deaisia Acklin (9 points, 7 helpers) also faring well. DC’s main areas of dominance were at the foul line (18-20; Post 2-6 FT) and in turnovers (+15, 32-17). They also had a bench scoring edge of 52-35. With the win, the Chargers are firmly locked in 3rd place in the division, two games in arrears of Caldwell. Post is just above the cut line for the last playoff spot with Concordia and Felician nipping at their heels.
