Women's Game Recaps #56 - 2/13/15

Redhawks and Wildcats pick up Friday road wins…

  • Roberts Wesleyan moved into a three-way tie for 3rd place in the ECC thanks to a 73-61 win at Bridgeport. The Redhawks trailed early (UB, 18-7) but a 20-2 bomb handed the visitors a lead they never relinquished, 36-24 (4:31). The halftime margin was 42-36 after the Purple Knights recovered but the home team fell into a 55-43 hole at the 8:25 after a three-pointer from Lucy Covley (17 points). UB rallied by scoring the next seven points (55-50, 5:33) but that was as close as they came. Marissa Sell (19 points, 15 boards), Samantha Courtney (13 points, 9 caroms) and Brooke Fields (12 points) shared the wealth for RWC, whose biggest edge was at the stripe (21-25; UB 6-9 FT). Jennifer Kucukkaya (15 points, 7 rebounds), Tiara Aziz (14 points), Morgan Caution (10 points) and Jenna Hoffman (11 rebounds) fared well for the PK’s in defeat.

  • Daemen ended a four-game slide with a 72-60 decision at Dowling, in the process extending the Golden Lions’ losing skid to four games. The Wildcats leapt to a quick 19-5 lead less than six minutes into the clash but Dowling chipped away and closed the gap to 40-37 by the half. Christine Verrelle (12 points) scored and a three-pointer from Kamille Ejerta (9 points) handed Dowling a 42-40 lead early in the second half and they were still on top (48-44) when the Wildcats got back into gear. An 11-0 spree put Daemen ahead to stay (55-48, 10:15), Sarah Saba (18 points, 8 boards) notching seven of the points in the run. It was a 66-54 game (6:19) when Dowling made a last push, cutting the deficit to 66-60 with a 6-0 jag (3:42), but they ran dry after that and didn’t score again. Shy Britton (11 points, 8 caroms) and Leah McDonell (11 points) supported Saba nicely for the Wildcats, which won the glass battle (47-36) and used the ball well (15 assists, 9 turnovers). Krstina Surlan (18 points, 8 rebounds) and Jessica Kalbfleisch (12 points) registered double digits for Dowling along with Verrelle, as they also distributed the ball neatly (12 assists, 11 miscues). Most shooting stats were close, although free throws were a little better for Daemen (6-7; Dowling 1-5 FT).
