Women's Game Recaps #63 - 2/19/17

* Sunday's only game was a good one; Mercy beat the University of the District of Columbia, 55-54, in the nation's capital to end a seven-game slide. The teams were never separated by more than seven points all game long with seven ties and four lead changes thrown in. Chi-La Bady's free throw with :18 left proved to be the deciding point for the Mavericks and they held on when Shantrel Oliver (15 points) missed on UDC's final possession. A low-scoring first half ended with a 10-2 Firebird rush, sending them into the locker room wih a 24-20 advantage. Their lead crested at 29-22 a little over three minutes into the third period and it was still 32-27 a minute later when Mercy responded. Latisha Clark (17 points, 6 boards, 7-11 FG) netted the next nine points to give the Mavericks the lead (36-32) and, after Bianca White sank a trey for UDC, the Mavericks ended the frame with back-to-back three-pointers from Casey Sullivan and Cynthia Perez (12 points) to go up, 42-35. UDC began the last frame with a 7-0 flurry to knot the game at 42 and the teams swapped the lead for the remainder of the contest. UDC's Tyra Coombs (12 points, 8 rebounds) tied it for the final time with :38 on the clock, only to see Bady snap the deadlock and decide the game shortly thereafter at the line. Mercy shot better (48%-35%) and made 7-18 from three-point land, balancing off six more turnovers (20-14) than UDC. Kaiya Coleman (17 points, 6 rebounds) topped the Firebird scoring as they fared well at the stripe (13-16 FT) but still saw their losing streak extend to eighteen games. Both teams have long been out of ECC playoff contention.
