Women's Game Recaps #64 - 2/20/17

* Monday's only game saw Bridgeport tear off a decisive 20-0 third quarter run and hold on to beat Roberts Wesleyan in the Nutmeg State, 79-73. The result keeps both teams in the churn for ECC playoff spots with the Redhawks alone in fourth place for the moment with one game left and the Purple Knights in a deadlock with Daemen for sixth place with two tilts to play. UB scored the game's first six points but Roberts Wesleyan recovered to take a 21-19 lead at the end of the first frame and then stitched together a 17-4 spell in the second quarter to extend their lead to 40-25 (2:44). The host Purple Knights did notch a 6-2 run to end the half (42-31) and gathered some momentum as a result. Taya Andrews (16 points) began the third period with a basket for the Redhawks at the 9:26 mark but they didn't make another field goal for almost thirteen minutes. Bridgeport then embarked on their 20-0 explosion, keyed by a trio of three-pointers by Nicole Johnson (11 points) and a pair of triples from Sofia Ermeidou. By the time RWC scored again, UB had the lead for good, 51-44 (3:33). It was a 56-50 game after three periods and although the Redhawks made a few runs at Bridgeport (they came within four points), the Purple Knights seemed to be in good shape after a 7-0 spurt that gave them a 70-59 edge with 2:33 to go. The Redhawks (who had a three-game win streak snapped) responded with the next eight points to cut the deficit to 70-67 at the :56 mark. UB was able to keep the Redhawks at bay and sank 7-8 at the foul line in the last fifteen seconds to nail down the victory. Evelyn Ovner (19 points, 7-10 FG, 5-5 FT), Camera Miley (18 points, 5 assists, 5 boards, 8-10 FT), Samnell Vonleh (14 points, 6 boards, 7-11 FG) and Louise Ovner (12 rebounds) all helped the cause for Bridgeport, which shot 48% overall, hit 17-20 at the stripe and hauled in eight more rebounds then RWC (39-31). Emily Miller (17 points, 7 rebounds), Brooke Fields (17 points) and Andrews paced a Redhawks attack that went 20-23 at the line and forced seven more turnovers (22-15), leading to a 28-12 edge in points off mistakes. Roberts Wesleyan ends the regular season by hosting Daemen on Saturday while Bridgeport hosts LIU Post (Wednesday) and visits UDC (Saturday) to wrap up the regular season.
