Women's Game Recaps #77 - 3/16/17

* Roberts Wesleyan's bid for back-to-back NCCAA Division I titles fell by the wayside on Thursday as the Redhawks lost to Greenville (Illinois), 78-72, in the national semifinals. Taya Andrews (24 points, 8 rebounds, 4-9 3FG) and Emily Miller (19 points, 7 boards) had strong games for RWC but it wasn't enough as the Panthers (22-9) enjoyed surges in the third and fourth quarters to prevail. The Redhawks held the largest lead of the first half, 31-26, late in the second stanza and led 31-28 at the break. Andrews notched six straight points to propel the Redhawks to the largest lead of the game for either team, 41-31, with 6:40 to go in the third quarter. The Panthers answered with a 17-4 burst, including a 12-0 binge to end the spell, and led 48-45 with 2:29 to go in the frame. Greenville led 50-47 after three periods and stayed ahead until an Andrews triple gave Roberts Wesleyan its last lead, 66-65, with 3:18 on the clock. Laura Goodnight's (13 points, 10 rebounds) three-point play and a three-pointer from Meredith Crosier (18 points, 3-3 3FG) started an 8-0 Panthers retort and they led 73-66 with under a minute to go. Despite a pair of Andrews treys in the last minute the Redhawks never recovered and were knokced out of championship contention. Greenville had the upper hand in each shooting category, including overall (45%-41%), three-pointers (9-8) and at the line (Greenville 15-18 FT; RWC 2-6 FT) and advance to the title tilt against Emmanuel College (Georgia) on Saturday. RWC also plays on Saturday, facing Mid-American Christian University in the third place game.
