McCaffrey's Musings

McCaffrey's Musings

It’s March and time now to take a look at some of the records of teams vying for an NCAA bid: 5-0, 4-4, 4-3.  Well that wraps it up.

This season is a mess, but I think it’s important that we in no way blame the young men and women better known as student-athletes.  Several teams have cancelled or paused this season due to “mental health concerns”.  It’s imperative now, more than ever, that we listen to the people in uniform.  It’s been an odd time.  Friends I’ve known for years are in ways I’ve never imagined they could be and this columnist doesn’t have an answer other than “be nice”.  If a young man or woman goes to a coach or administrator and says, “I’m not feeling up to playing.” It’s ok.  Let’s find a way to make that person feel ok.

I’ve had people reach out to me and say, “The only reason _______ is playing is because he wants to win a regional.”  I have no idea why certain schools are playing, but it is not up to me or anyone else to judge their motives.  This is not a hard concept:  SUPPORT THE KIDS.  I know they become “adults” when they turn 18 or step foot on a college campus, but when I see adults that have lost their way in the world, it reminds me of the value of adapting to the times and respecting the idea and feelings of all who surround us.

I haven’t watched much hoops this season, because it’s a choice.  It’s also a choice to be disrespectful.  I’m not sure how many conference tourneys will start, let alone finish, but I’ve broadcast enough of them to know that the cutting down of the nets ceremony is one of joy and tears and it’s one everybody should experience at least once.  Furthermore, nobody should be anything but happy for the people who get to experience it over the next week.

My Favorite Things

A few weeks ago I discussed my favorite nicknames so time now to bring up my top 3 regional LOGOS!  One simple criteria:  The logo must elude to the school.  Otherwise, it’s like having road uniforms with your nickname and not the school.  Think about it!

3) Nyack College Warriors:  Over the years, Nyack has been rebranded more than once, but this version is one of the neatest in the region.  A shield with an N and a C and Warriors looming above.  Simple and effective!

  2) D’Youville Saints:  I see you working D’Youville.  I can’t wait to visit the ‘Ville.  A dog doesn’t need a halo.  Your dog may look mean,    but it has a halo. How bad can it be?

1) Goldey-Beacom Lightning— GBC has long had a great logo, but this version where lighting strikes twice, is my favorite logo.  Not only does the T in lightning form a bolt, but there’s a very angry dude that is willing to strike you with the lightning carried in his left glove.  Formidable!

That puts a bow on this edition.  Until next time, always do what’s right!
