 Women’s Game Recaps #66 – 2/18/18

  • Sunday’s only game was a hard-fought ECC clash in western New York where Daemen slid past Queens, 57-55, to record their first win ever against the Knights in ten tries. Sarah Saba (20 points, 8 boards) played all forty minutes for the Wildcats and surpassed the 1,700-point barrier in the process to lead the home team to victory while Beth Bonin (27 points; 40 minutes) also didn’t leave the floor in keeping QC in it until the end. The Knights led at the break, 28-25, and enjoyed a game-high seven-point edge on a number of occasions in the second half but couldn’t finish the deal. It was a 51-44 game with 8:01 to play when the Wildcats rallied, putting together a 10-2 run capped by a Saba three-point play to go ahead, 54-53. Marina Ramon Lopez (14 points, 11 rebounds) answered with 1:35 to go, sending Queens ahead for the last time, 55-54. Erin Egan sank a pair of free throws (1:19) for Daemen to give them the lead for good and Carina Pringle made another foul shot to make it 57-55 with 28 seconds on the clock. Bonin missed a game-tying shot with :04 left but Saba missed two free throws right after that to keep the door slightly ajar. Bonin’s buzzer-beating trey was also off the mark, however, and the Wildcats had the win. Tiara Filbert added 13 points for Daemen, who out-shot the Knights, 43-36%. Daemen has a two-game lead over Queens for fifth place and, with two games left, the Wildcats are just one game behind NYIT in fourth place. The Knights missed a chance to officially clinch a playoff berth but still have a two-game advantage over Bridgeport with two games to play.
