Women's Game Recaps #59 - 2/23/20

* Sara Nady exploded for a career-high 28 points to lead Roberts Wesleyan to a 75-63 ECC victory over the University of the District of Columbia on Sunday in Rochester, all but locking the Redhawks into the 5th seed in the conference. RWC scored the first seven points of the day and led 34-18 at halftime, allowing the Firebirds little in the way of a comeback to that juncture. UDC did rally in the third quarter, closing the deficit to 48-42 by the time the last period arrived. The Firebirds scored first once there to make it a 48-44 game but the Redhawks registered the next seven points (55-44, 6:01), portending an excellent stanza for the home team. RWC ended up making 7-9 from the floor in the last quarter and augmented that with a 12-12 showing at the line, icing the game by going 10-10 at the stripe to close it out. Nady (9-13 FG, 4-7 3FG, 6-6 FT) was helped out by Emily Miller (15 points, 17 rebounds, 6 assists; 7-10 FG) and Taryn Wilson (13 points; 4-7 FG, 3-6 3FG) for the winners, as they shot 51% overall, won the glass battle (39-21) and feasted at the line (RWC 22-24; UDC 2-4 FT). Maya Thomas (22 points; 6-16 3FG), Halia Ellis (16 points) and Alexus King (15 points) provided the bulk of the UDC scoring but they were not able to keep up with the Redhawks from the floor (35% FG) or shoot as efficiently from three-point land (UDC 11-37; RWC 7-17 3FG). The Redhawks, on a four-game winning streak, trail the teams above them in the ECC by two games with two left, so chances of moving up are slender. The Firebirds are even with Bridgeport, one game behind Queens for the last ECC playoff spot.
